Zambia is one of Africa’s wild safari destinations without some of the pretensions of more sophisticated countries further south. You come to Zambia for real Africa where the interiors don’t matter as much as the exteriors. Having said that, the lodges situated on the banks of the Zambezi close to Victoria Falls are some of the most refined you can wish for and often take their queue from colonial influences, where afternoon tea and pre-dinner drinks on the terrace is de rigueur.
We use a number of these gracious lodges and what they all have in common is “position, position, position”. All situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi, which flows fast and wide intently towards the lip of Victoria Falls. Livingstone named the falls in honour of his sovereign queen and is credited with being the first European to view this mile-wide waterfall. Locals called it Mosi-oa-Tunya (‘Mist that Thunders’) and when standing on the terrace of the Victoria Falls Hotel, you will understand just why.
Victoria Falls area has become known as the adrenaline centre of Africa, with the numerous rapids and gorges used for such daredevil activities as bungee jumping, white water rafting, jet boating, paragliding, microlight flights and other crazy adventure sports. At the other extreme, the area is known for being very romantic, with honeymoon hideaways and intimate dinners on one of several islands and a double rainbow sparkling over Victoria Falls.
While there are some reserves in the Livingstone / Victoria Falls area, we will be sending you to or from renowned game parks like Chobe or the Okavango Delta in nearby Botswana or one of Zambia’s wild game areas like the Lower Zambezi, Kafue and Luangwa. It was here in Luangwa that walking safaris were pioneered led by experienced guides, which remain the specialty of the area.
Zambia will always feature in our itineraries as nowhere epitomizes the various facets of 21st century Africa so well; it blends sophistication and rawness into a truly African experience.
