This extraordinary journey recreates luxury trans-Africa travel as it was at the turn of the 20th century. Expect to be wined and dined in the best traditions and in appreciation of this authentic experience, you are encouraged to dress for dinner. Starting in the beautiful Cape Winelands village of Franschhoek, we place you in the most discreet, deluxe guest house, whose position and interiors help to remove you from ‘real’ life and transport you into an altogether different world for the next two weeks. La Residence sets the standards of excellence for the rest of the trip. Your next accommodation is in central Cape Town at the Mount Nelson Hotel –the grandest hotel in Cape Town upholding all the colonial customs. One such is High Tea at the ‘Nellie’ – a mid-afternoon feast not to be missed during your three nights here. To reach the northern safari areas of South Africa, we transport you most of the way on Rovos Rail. With just three cabins per carriage, Rovos Rail can justifiably claim that it is the most luxurious train in the world. Rovos Rail takes a leisurely two and a half days to pamper you on this journey of utter decadence and relaxation, where complimentary champagne flows freely. Camp Jabulani is our selected safari accommodation, offering incredible refinement in the African bush. Beautiful artworks and sculptures adorn this safari lodge, but it’s the Camp Jabulani elephant herd that take centre stage. Rescued as orphans and treated with sensitivity and love, these elephants are tame enough to ride and is one of the ways you will explore this big game area. Return to the familiarity of your Rovos Rail carriage for another two nights travelling across Africa to arrive in style at Victoria Falls. Re-live the moment when Livingstone first saw this spectacle and realised the Zambezi was un-navigable. Continuing the Edwardian colonial theme, your last couple of nights are at the superb River Club on the banks of the Zambezi, where croquet on the lawn is a must.

La Residence is part of the privately owned Royal Portfolio of unique residences, which we adore because each one is different and always full of elegant surprises, from the odd whimsical piece of décor to their exquisite settings. La Residence in Franschhoek upholds all that is best about their properties; décor complemented by both antiques and contemporary artworks in a chateau-style building, set amongst mountains and valleys of the prettiest Cape Winelands village. This sets the scene for the kind of quality you can expect on this discerning itinerary.
It is a cliché to describe the Mount Nelson as the grand dame of Cape Town’s hotels, but not without justification. Her heritage extends back to 1899 when she accommodated well-healed passengers of ocean liners. The tradition of serving a sumptuous High Tea remains to this day. Traditional décor of upholstered wing-back chairs reminds you of its colonial past but the Planet Bar is very much ‘now’ and is the chic haunt of an international jet-set and sophisticated locals. The Mount Nelson remains the most iconic luxury hotel in Cape Town and enjoys a convenient central location.

Last year the Rovos Rail celebrated its twentieth anniversary having established itself as one of the train companies in the mould of the Orient Express. Rovos Rail’s routes criss-cross southern Africa on safaris passing through a magnificent diversity of scenery such as the Victoria Falls.. The locomotives and carriages have been renovated to a very high standard. Vistas change from the game reserves of Mpumalanga to the dry Namibian deserts, Journey itineraries range from a single day to a fortnight.
If you love elephants, you will love Camp Jabulani. Jabulani is the mother of all elephants, who was rescued as a baby by Lente Roode, owner of this very beautiful and very upmarket safari lodge in the Kapama Game Reserve created by her husband. Lente’s love of animals led her to rescue many more and Camp Jabulani became one of the first to offer soul-based elephant riding. It’s an amazing experience and so is staying at Camp Jabulani, surrounded by valuable artworks and suites that don’t want for any comforts.

Pretoria to Victoria Falls: You have by now experienced the soporific rhythm of Rovos Rail and this time we chug north through South Africa and Zimbabwe to arrive at Victoria Falls. This was the route that Cecil Rhodes hoped to continue from Cape to Cairo and we get to see the famed Victoria Falls Bridge that he started but never set eyes on. You get to experience the joys of someone else doing all the driving and all you have to do is dress for dinner and sip on fine wines.
Across the Zimbabwe – Zambian border, we choose to accommodate you in the stately style that you have now become accustomed to at The River Club just upstream of Victoria Falls. After Rovos Rail, The River Club this will feel familiar, with suites perched on the banks of the Zambezi and quietly themed to remind you of explorers who made their mark in the Edwardian-Victorian era. You don’t have to dress up here, but you do have to pass the port to the left or blow the bugle as a penance. This is the place where you indulge in the most popular activity, “nothing at all”
