Product Information > Luxury Resorts> Kasbah Tamadot, Atlas Mountains, Morocco> 27 Bedrooms > Grade: Platinum
Purchased in 1988 by Richard Branson after he had seen it on a ballooning expedition, Kashbah Tamadot is set in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains near the village of Asni, an hour’s drive from Marrakesh. It is indisputably, north-west Africa’s premier guest retreat.

The hotel’s concept is sensitive to the Berber culture and sympathetic to the local surroundings and forms part of Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition portfolio of unique retreats. His other South African venue is Ulusaba Private Game Reserve bordering Kruger Nation Park. The complement of staff is substantially at Kashbah Tamadot is local Berber Tamazight-speaking villagers (many of whom have some English or French), aided by three mules and two camels!

As inspired by the Islamic fortress retreats of the country, the Kasbah resembles a walled redoubt complete with battlements and as such has exotic magical and alluring qualities.

Externally, the exquisitely landscaped gardens, groves and courtyards beguile visitors, while interiors of carved ceilings and hand-painted furniture demonstrate an eclectic blending of artifacts.

Decoration ranges from antique carved Indian doors, Indonesian statues, elaborate mosaics, ornate silver chairs and sumptuous sofas, while the reflective pool is arrestingly beautiful. This is complemented by a three bedroom studio mini-kasbah in the garden.

Accommodation at Kashbah Tamadot comprises various Suites and Berber Tented Suites. Three-bedroom Master Suites are positioned at the far end of a dramatic infinity pool and form an ideal family space. All suites include either a terrace or balcony, while the Master Suite is equipped with a swimming pool. The six Berber Tented Suites feature a private deck and plunge pool enjoying superb Atlas Mountain views. Five are a short walk through the herb and vegetable garden, whilst the sixth hoves into view on approach to the hotel, offering magnificent sunset valley vistas.

Dining is a highlight of both international and Moroccan cuisine such as tagine, the traditional freestanding charcoal-burning clay brazier. Meals feature produce from the herb and vegetable gardens and are served around an intimate fireside bar or on terraces affording breathtaking views. The Kanoun Restaurant is constructed from sun-baked clay to an indigenous design. The romantic option of al fresco dining around the candle-lit reflecting pool on the rooftop terrace under the stars is a private treat.

Activities and recreation are from both indoor and outdoor infinity pools, tennis, table-tennis, horse-riding and a gymnasium. WiFi is available, a library and a telescope with which to star-gaze. Excursions offered include exploration of the city of Marrakesh, of its Jemma El Fna Square and Koutoubia Mosque and Minaret, exploration of the Atlas Mountains on foot, by 4 by 4 or by mule. Exceptionally, one can take to the air in a hot-air balloon. Children have a dedicated provision with such diversions as treasure hunts and horse and cart rides. Local handicrafts may be bought at the Virgin Unite giftshop.

The Asounfou Spa (meaning ‘relax’ in Berber) has a full range of treatments for men and women. There is also a traditional Moroccan hammam steam bath (as well as sauna) to deep cleanse, purify and soften the skin by means of local cleansing rituals
