Product Information > Safari> Kleins Camp, Serengeti> 10 Cotages> Grade: Platinum
The renowned Serengeti National Park consists of vast swathes of grass and woodland herbivore habitat, scene of the spectacular Great Migration across to Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve (and adjacent Ngorongoro Conservation Area) familiar from natural history documentaries of numerous predatory lion, teeming zebra, hapless wildebeest and opportunistic crocodile. The seasonal rains entice grazers to pursue fresh pasture in fording the Grumeti and Mara Rivers whilst giving birth en route (see Serengeti synopsis). The scale is epic as millions of large animals form the largest migratory concentration in the word and sparse landscape immense as reflected in the translation of the name Serengeti from the Masai, ‘endless plains.

Klein’s Camp’s ten thatched whitewashed cottages command a site on the crest of the Kuka Hills overlooking the game-filled Grumeti River Valley below and hills beyond, a vantage point of magnificent uninterrupted panoramas. This wildlife stage is the vital corridor connecting the Serengeti to the Masai Mara. The remoteness of the camp to the south of the Masai Mara on the rugged outskirts of the park situated amongst the undulating grasslands, marshes, arboreal river banks and adjacent slopes of resident giraffe and elephant allows one to fully explore the abundant wildlife without restrictions of access.Ten thousand hectares of private land is set aside for guests in this enclave of the north-eastern Serengeti; the local Masai as owners of the land are stakeholders in the camp.

The exclusivity of the camp creates an intimate environment which is otherwise restful and tastefully furnished in soft cream tones. The stone interiors of the guest reception rooms are of rich wooden floors and plush leather armchairs to reline on complemented by roaring fireplaces and candlelit pan-African fine dining of an evening.Private verandahs constitute viewing platforms from which to espy passing wildlife traffic by binocular, take photographs or sketch.

The views from the freeform swimming pool terrace of dark wood loungers are equally impressive across to the distant hills. The decor is understated in rustic fashion, walls decorated with African memorabilia.
Deep sofas are complemented by raw silk and chenille cushions and throws. A large leather ottoman beaded in the Masai style is the coffee table and informal wildlife library.

Activities in addition to both day and night wildlife game drive safari include: bush walking tour, ornithology, photography and guided day excursions into the Serengeti wilderness. Elephants are common here and guests may expect to encounter them at reasonably close-quarters. Otherwise common sightings are made of Grant’s gazelle, lion, leopard and eland as well as the many wildebeest. The Grumeti River, whose source is on the Kenyan side of the border, provides a dense forest habitat for the reclusive bushbuck and bushpig as well as the more commonly seen elephant and buffalo. Hippos inhabit nearby pools (the large river crocodiles are further down the Grumeti). The woodlands are home to giraffe, impala and nesting birds while acacias attract gazelle, baboon, vervet monkey and bushbaby. During the wet season, the Grumeti floods forming oxbow lake wetland, marsh and watering hole habitats for reedbuck (elusive marsh-dwellers), elephant and buffalo which mud-bathe. Ornithologists will appreciate the birds drawn to these wetlands: an array of species ranging from the beautiful malachite kingfisher to the majestic yellow-billed stork.

Children are welcome, charged at half-rate aged 6-11; staying for free if under 6 sharing with an adult.
