Product Information > Safari> Ulusaba, Sabi Sand Reserve, South Africa > 21 Bedrooms > Grade: Platinum
The location of the Ulusaba Game Reserve in the most highly-rated safari destination of Sabi-Sabi west of the Kruger National Park is ideal while the setting of the lodges’ conical thatched roofs on stilts high upon a craggy ‘koppie’ escarpment is redolent of Hollywood films of King Solomon’s Mines evoking images of romantic escape and frontier adventure. Yet, without the discomfort as Richard Branson’s customary business sense of unparalleled luxury come to the fore whilst empowering local attentive staff. Children are catered for with activities organised via a Cub’s Club. The two Rock and Safari lodges each provide a different perpective on the bush, between which guests may divide their stay. ‘’Ulusaba’’ translates as ‘place of little fear’ as the granite vantage point of Rock Lodge had been a natural lookout for the Shangaan warriors.

South Africa is blessed in regard to the impressive diversity of wildlife including the largest land-based mammal: the African elephant, the tallest: the giraffe, the fastest: the cheetah, the smallest: the dwarf shrew, the largest non-flying bird: the ostrich and the largest flying bird: the kori bustard. The famed ‘Big Five’ consist of lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and water buffalo (sometimes supplemented by cheetah and wild dog to make the ‘Big Seven’); many visitors aspire to ‘tick off’ their viewing list safari journal entries as many of these as possible...try to spot a dazzle of zebra or pod of hippos!, Africa’s second largest land mammal weighing up to three and a half tons.

The Main House at Rock Lodge comprises various suites and rooms, a large heated swimming pool, breakfast deck, gym, boma (enclosed) spa, floodlit tennis courts with viewing platform decks in addition to Cliff Lodge’s two superior suites offering unparalleled luxury accommodation. The entrance and reception is at Safari Lodge (about 500 meters separate the two sites with a bar in the middle, shuttle transportation being used)

With its complement of lodges termed Safari, Elephant and River in addition to a Treehouse, further boma spa, viewing deck, pools and gift shop located on the dry Mabrak Riverbed amid jackalberry trees with Xikwenga Dam nearby. Rock Lodge has four south-facing en suite Rock Cliff Rooms, two of which are built on split levels with connecting spiral staircase.

Moreover, there is a separate two en suite bedroom Rock Suite, en suite Master Suite over three levels of great views from private balconies with plunge pool and two bi-level Makwela Suites with outdoor showers, infinity plunge pool, living area with separate study/ library and internet access. The Safari Lodge is built in a tree house style close to the bushveld criss-crossed by linking swing bridges and raised wooden walkways to such venues as the outdoor bush-dining Boma. Children over 12 are welcome. The three en suite Safari Rooms have large viewing decks, the three Elephant Rooms are built in elevated tree house-style with substantial viewing decks while the four en suite River Rooms offer privacy also built in a tree house style, three of which are accessed by swing bridge while two have plunge pools.

Alternatively, the commodious Treehouse Suite has a deck overlooking the dam whilst another verandah is ideal for breakfasts and entertaining accommodating up to sixteen. Indigenous materials are used throughout of hewn stone and varnished timbers lending the construction an antiquated charm. African design cues are to the fore in a sensitive blending of local and neo-colonial while in terms of rendering all materials and finishes are of the highest quality. Expansive decking verandahs invite one to survey the horizon and prove to be irresistible vantage points from which to sip sundowners; the aerial aspects are simply magnificent with a sense of overview of the sweeping bush assured from an elevated perspective. Meals can be enjoyed from here al fresco removed high from the ground or seated outside in the bush as illuminated by torches and cauldrons of nightfire.
